Benjamin Button (Brad Pitt) is born an old man in New Orleans and ages in reverse, growing younger as everyone around him grows older - including Daisy (Cate Blanchett), the woman he loves across an entire lifetime that's moving the wrong direction. David Fincher, working from Eric Roth's script (loosely adapting F. Scott Fitzgerald), stretches the story across nearly a century, following Benjamin through war, work, and a string of near-misses with Daisy before their timelines finally, briefly, line up.
It's Fincher at his most tender and least cynical, trading the clinical precision of Se7en or Zodiac for something closer to a fable - three Oscars went to its makeup and visual effects work alone, which had to age Pitt convincingly in both directions. Underneath the trick, though, it's really just asking an old question: what does it cost to love someone whose clock runs opposite to yours?
