Week three moves from teenage heartbreak to something more weathered. Inman (Jude Law) deserts the Confederate Army after being wounded and begins a long walk home across a collapsing South, back to Ada (Nicole Kidman), the woman he barely got to know before the war took him. Anthony Minghella - the director behind The English Patient - builds it as an odyssey in the literal sense, with Renée Zellweger's scene-stealing turn as the fiercely capable Ruby keeping Ada's half of the story alive while Inman is gone.
The two leads spend most of the film apart, which is a strange choice for a love story, but it's exactly what makes the reunion land as hard as it does - all that waiting given weight instead of just filling time. It's less romance than survival with romance folded into it, and it's better for that restraint.
