Coggeshall Farm Museum | Bristol, RI
The purpose of this program is for the various British/Provincial Light Infantry Companies, and any interested battalion and grenadier units, to come together for a day of Light Infantry drill on the grounds around this historic farm museum. This gorgeous and historic site is damn near perfect for conducting a rewarding and thorough day of light infantry instruction on grounds that simulate a range of period style terrain.
As we advance deep into the bowels of the 250th, this is our chance to really hone our collective light infantry / petit guerre skills - as well as interpret to the attending public the remarkable transformation the light infantry, as well as the overall British army, went through over the first year of the war and gearing up for the massive campaigns of 1776 and beyond. The shock of April 19 dramatically reshaped British military doctrine. I envision the event being something like the training that was conducted in England at Sarum and Salisbury camp in 1774, as well as after April 19 in Halifax and the "Mock Attack at Warley Camp" in 1778.
Primary kit should focus on early war / full dress, but it might also be valuable to demonstrate some of the material culture and kit changes which paralleled the doctrinal efforts.
While this will be a single-day event, I hope that makes it more feasible for more local and regional units to attend. I will be posting a more detailed 10am-to-5pm schedule in the next week or so. I should make clear that I make *no* claim to be the sole expert on light infantry tactics - many of us are already intimately familiar and maybe even have strengths of knowledge not more widely held. So, let's consider this a collaborative affair. To that end, I welcome any suggestions and deeper involvement from any of you. In the meantime, please do remind your membership of this event and the value in participating.
Sincere apologies for the delays in getting a more official notice out to you all (entirely my fault). I've spoken with several of you less formally over the past couple months but, with a month to go, it's time to really nail this one down.
We attempted to do a similar program at Minuteman in 2022 - and managed to summon a record heatwave. Here's hoping for more seasonable weather!
