About this Event

Discover the highlights of the British Museum - a small group tour (maximum eight)

“Outstanding. Intelligent, articulate and friendly. You feel involved and inspired, not just led around. His British Museum tour is the only one you really need to do.”

“Really informative and interesting tour. Thoroughly enjoyed it”

“an in-depth look at the Museum highlights with lots of interesting anecdotes. Highly recommended.”

The British Museum is one of the finest collections of objects of human culture in the world, but its scale can be off-putting to the visitor.

Join me for a tour of the museum’s highlights where we’ll see some of the amazing artefacts it holds and hear the incredible stories that they have to tell.

Our first half takes you through treasures from the ancient world, including the mysterious Rosetta Stone, the all-powerful Rameses the Great, the exquisite carvings of the Assyrians, a mediterranean mausoleum and the world-famous Parthenon Marbles – 2500 years old and still one of the crowning achievements of Western sculpture.

After a coffee break, we’ll look at objects found in Britain including a unique Roman mosaic, gold and silver treasures from 4000 years of history, an iron age ‘mummy’, the famous Lewis chess pieces, Anglo-Saxon artefacts from Sutton Hoo that put paid to the idea of a ‘dark ages’ and two of the most astoundingly beautiful pieces of medieval craftsmanship you will ever see.

We'll also visit treasures from ancient Bablyon, the Aztecs, Rapa Nui (Easter Island) and more. You'll come away with a much broader understanding of world cultures and the museum's collection.

Excellent! Don, was wonderful! He described things so well I actually felt like I was there in ancient times.

This tour is limited to eight people, so you will not be in a big, anonymous group.

N.B. - very important. The British Museum now has tickets (which are free) for timed entry. Go here to book your ticket - I’d recommend getting the 1000-1030 time slots on Sunday 19th April so you can be in time for our 1030 meet.
