10 Week African Drumming Course with Elliott Orr
Are you open to learning some deep African grooves?
This is the ideal ‘active meditation’.
Wednesday’s
All levels
7 - 9 pm
July 15, 22, 29
August 5, 12, 19, 26
September 2, 9, 16
Thursday’s
Beginners
6:30 - 8:10 pm
Intermediate/Advanced (extended session)
6:30 - 9:30 pm
July 16, 23, 30
August 6, 13, 20, 27
September 3, 10, 17
The material covered is the same on both Wednesday and Thursday nights so if you need to miss one class you can go to the other night in that week instead.
The course fee covers 10 classes within Course 3, 2026. This means if you miss a week you can make up your missed class by coming to both Wednesday and Thursday another week.
Over this 10 week course Elliott will patiently guide you towards the ability to play a powerfully healing rhythmic composition.
By the end of this course you’ll know the introduction, the various accompaniment parts, breaks and calls and we’ll cover some solo phrases. There may even be a song!
With full respect to the traditional owners of this music, the people of Africa, Elliott will talk about the history of the djembe as well as the complexities and techniques of playing the djembe.
This course is super exciting as it culminates in a performance with Zormiwasa in Brisbane in late September. Date and details to be confirmed.
You may have danced to Elliott’s playing before at Island Vibe, Woodford, Earth Frequency Festival, or even at the Fortitude Hall!
He leads the African rhythm ensemble Spankinhide and performs regularly with the Palm Wine Ambassadors, Bobby Alu, Mood Swing and Chevy Bass and Ganga Giri amongst a bunch of other groups.
Both courses are 100% open to complete beginners AND also perfect for experienced players as Elliott can teach multiple levels in the one session. Thursday is unique in that it includes an intermediate/advanced portion.
There are plenty of drums to hire if you don’t have your own.
Elliott sells drums or perhaps you’d like to do a drum making workshop. Chat with Elliott at class.
