About this Event
The Ludington Area Center for the Arts (LACA) will host an unforgettable evening of music Saturday, May 2 at 7 p.m. in the Bob & Kay Neal Performance Hall as acclaimed mandolinist Brian Oberlin celebrates the release of his new solo album, Troubadour Anew: Original Music and Modern Classical For Solo Mandolin.
Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Tickets may be purchased during normal business hours at LACA or online at www.ludingtonartscenter.org. Audience members are strongly encouraged to purchase tickets in advance, as advance sales play a vital role in helping small venues like LACA plan, staff, and sustain high-quality live performances.
Troubadour Anew marks Oberlin’s first solo release in a decade and showcases his remarkable range as both composer and interpreter. The album features six original swing and bluegrass compositions—pieces that are sure to become staples in performances by Full Cord, the award-winning band Oberlin proudly performs with. Reflecting the dynamic nature of his live solo performances, the album is interwoven with classical repertoire, including original arrangements for solo mandolin.
Adding a distinctive dimension to the recording are six modern classical works by renowned composers Dmitri Shostakovich, Sergei Prokofiev, Antonin Dvorak, Alfred Schnittke, and Giovanni Sollima. The result is a compelling blend of bluegrass roots, swing rhythms, and sophisticated classical interpretation, all delivered through Oberlin’s expressive and virtuosic mandolin work.
Joining Oberlin for this special release concert are Sallie Bacon on bass and Dee Sutton on guitar and vocals, both members of the Michigan-based band Sweet Dee and the Wild Honeys. Bacon and Sutton will accompany Oberlin on many selections throughout the evening, adding depth and energy to what promises to be a standout performance for Michigan music fans.
This album release party offers audiences a rare opportunity to experience new music in an intimate performance setting while directly supporting both regional artists and a community arts venue committed to bringing high-quality programming to the Lakeshore.
