About this Event

Break the Block, Calgary

Wednesday September 30, 2026

4:30 to 8:00 PM

Unfiltered Wine Bar, 1020 14th St SW

First, the date.

September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and Orange Shirt Day. We chose this date on purpose.

We could have picked a different Wednesday. We did not, because we believe this day asks something of all of us, and gathering in community intentionally is more powerful than quietly scheduling around it.

Our evening begins later in the day intentionally, creating space for those who are able to participate in events happening across Calgary beforehand.

We will open by acknowledging where and why we are gathering and will take a meaningful pause together before the session begins. We also invite guests to wear orange in recognition of Orange Shirt Day.

$15 from every ticket goes to the Moose Hide Campaign, an Indigenous led grassroots movement working to end gender-based violence against women, children, and all those along the gender continuum. BDI - The People Company™ has a longstanding relationship with this organization.

We did not choose them because the calendar asked us to. We chose them because this work matters to us, and because for some of us it is not abstract.

Then we build.

There is a moment, right after change gets announced, that almost nobody talks about. A private one, where even very capable people quietly think, this makes me uncomfortable. Almost everyone has had it. Almost nobody says it out loud.

That moment is where this session starts.

Break the Block is about the psychology of change and how it actually lands on and with a person. Uncertainty activates the same threat response in the brain as physical danger.

Readiness is not enthusiasm for change, and it is not agreement with the direction of it. Readiness is the capacity to stay functional, connected, and clear while things are uncertain.

It can be built, deliberately.

You will not sit and absorb slides.

Every person builds. Every person speaks. One hundred percent participation, every time.

Using LEGO® Serious Play®, you will

  • Measure your own change readiness using our signature Change Readiness Pulse Tool
  • Recognize which of the four Change Styles is your default, including the superpower it hands you and the shadow that comes with it
  • Hear how change lands on the people around you, which is almost always the part that surprises people most
  • Leave with a clearer picture of your change-ready self, and language to share

Then we stay.

The last stretch of the evening is open. It is a warm, unpretentious room built for exactly the kind of conversation that only happens after people have already been honest with each other.

If you need to head out after the session, that is completely fine and nobody will think twice.

Who this is for

Anyone who leads, supports, or is navigating change.

Senior leaders, Mid-level management, HR and People teams, Project Managers and Business Owners. Change does not check your title before it lands on you.

Whether you are the one asking people to shift or the one being asked, understanding how change works on human beings has stopped being a nice-to-have. It is a core skill now, and almost nobody is taught it.

Why LEGO® Serious Play®

The methodology came out of LEGO® under Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, developed with researchers at IMD and grounded in constructionist learning theory from MIT. The premise is simple. People think differently when their hands are involved, and they say things they would never say sitting around a boardroom table. We have watched it happen in every room we have run.

The evening

4:30 Doors, arrival, settle in
4:45 Land acknowledgement and Recognition
5:00 Break the Block session
7:20 Wine, bites, conversation
8:00 Close
