The Possibilities of Play: Writing as Wanderlust
Come join us for this workshop featuring Eric Fischman, a renowned local poet who brings an infectious joy and levity to the written and spoken word. Fischman will read from some of his work, share with us his lighthearted rules of engagement, and take a deep dive into how play can bring us face to face with our bright aliveness. Fischman dares us to ask: What does it mean to truly play on the page, to enter a world with no rules? Are we even allowed to write purely for our own fun and amusement? In this session, we will explore these ideas through collaborative writing games. By not holding sole responsibility for the finished work, we can unshackle our pens and buck the walls we've built around our poet minds, both consciously and unconsciously. Finally, we will apply this freedom to our own writing and see just how far into the unknown we can go.
Eric Raanan Fischman is an MFA graduate of Naropa University’s Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics in Colorado. He has taught for Arapahoe Community College, Crestone Poemfest, the Firehouse Art Center in Longmont, and Mi Chantli in Boulder. His work has appeared in Bombay Gin, Denver Quarterly, the Boulder Weekly newspaper, New Feathers Anthology, Bristlecone, Twenty Bellows, The Mid-Atlantic Review, Tiny Spoon, and many more. In 2023, he was one of two winners of Denver Quarterly’s annual broadside competition, with 60 copies letterpressed. In 2025, he was nominated for a Best of the Net Award. He currently curates the Boulder/Denver metro area poetry calendar at boulderpoetryscene.com.
