Brazilian Rain Tree Bonsai Workshop, 10/26

Learn basic bonsai techniques to start transforming plants into bonsai. Learn why it is important to have a good soil mix, root-prune, repot, and choose the right angles when repotting. Take this knowledge home and apply it to other plants as well.

In this class we will work on the Brazilian Rain Tree also known as 'Gilly' (here at the bonsai shop).

I'm 'Gilly' the Brazilian Rain Tree, native to the Brazil rainforests. I am a hardwood tree known for my small leaves that usually close up at night, or when agitated too much.I am a symbol of transformation and life cycles, much like the rainforest itself. Keep me in a location that has partial or full sun a few hours a day and water by submerging every 5 days. I don't suffer from overwatering, so when in doubt, give me a soak.

Symbolism: I represent transformation and life cycles, much like the rainforest itself. I respond to touch - when agitated I'll start to close up, much the same way I do when I go to sleep at night.

This class is for beginners to intermediate.

Classes limited to 5 students for one-on-one instruction.

Materials Provided: handmade bonsai planter in small white*, one bonsai tree, soil, decorative rocks, necessary tools for repotting. Other materials on site available for purchase.

*You may opt for a small gray planter on site for an extra $15

Matthew Puntigam lived and worked in Tokyo for 7 years learning bonsai techniques and garden skills while apprenticing at Kaneyama Landscape Design and Sinajina Bonsai Shop. He opened Dandy Farmer in 2016 to bring the art of bonsai to the NYC community.
