Brandy Sour: A Book + Wine Night
About this Event
Brandy Sour: Flavours of Cyprus – Book Club + Wine Night
Join us for an intimate evening of storytelling, wine, and conversation as we explore the flavours, history, and culture of Cyprus through literature and wine.
For one special evening, we'll gather at The Cottage, Edinburgh, for a book club experience centred around — the acclaimed novel by Cypriot author Constantia Soteriou, translated into English by Lina Protopapa. Winner of the 2023 Cypriot National Book Prize, the novel examines identity, memory, family, and belonging against the backdrop of Cyprus and its complex history.
Hosted by Rebecca Roberts of Night Owl Books alongside Isobel Salamon of Slonk Wine, the evening combines literary discussion with a curated tasting designed to bring the flavours of Cyprus to life.
What's included:
- A welcome Brandy Sour on arrival
- A glass of Cypriot wine (non-alcoholic alternatives available)
- A selection of curated nibbles inspired by the flavours of Cyprus
- A guided discussion of Brandy Sour + copy of the book.
- An introduction to Cypriot wine and culture
The wine:
Cyprus is home to one of the world's oldest wine cultures, with a winemaking history stretching back thousands of years. From the mountainous vineyards of the Troodos range to the sun-drenched Mediterranean coast, the island's wines tell a story of resilience, tradition, and exchange.
Discover indigenous grape varieties and distinctive wines shaped by ancient landscapes, diverse influences, and a deep-rooted culture of hospitality.
Begin the evening with a Brandy Sour on arrival before exploring the flavours of Cyprus through a carefully selected glass of Cypriot wine.
The book:
Written by Constantia Soteriou and translated by Lina Protopapa, Brandy Sour is an evocative exploration of identity, memory, and place. Through family stories and shifting histories, it examines what it means to belong, and how our understanding of home is shaped by migration, inheritance, and the landscapes we leave behind.
Together, wine and literature offer a lens through which to experience Cyprus: its traditions, tensions, and enduring spirit.
