About this Event
Join photographer Eutropio Rodríguez for a discussion of his photobook The Generals of Ulla.
The Generals of Ulla is a photobook that documents, for the first time in a complete and systematic way, one of Europe’s most singular Carnival traditions: the Xenerais da Ulla, celebrated across ten municipalities in the Ulla River valley in Galicia, northern Spain.
Over a five-year period, photographers Javier Iglesias Ramos and Eutropio Rodríguez followed the festival in all its variations—horseback parades, baroque military attire, and the iconic atranques—creating a powerful visual narrative of a living and evolving ritual.
The book is accompanied by an in-depth research text by musician and anthropological researcher Fernando Reyes, who revisits the origins of the tradition and situates it within the broader context of Baroque festive culture in the Iberian Peninsula and the Americas, reaffirming the Generals of Ulla as a cultural heritage of exceptional historical and artistic value.
Bio: Eutropio Rodríguez (@eutropiorodriguez) has worked as a freelance photographer for nearly three decades. Trained in documentary photography, his practice is primarily focused on portraiture, with a particular emphasis on his international work with musicians. He is also a photography educator and editor, and in recent years has researched and edited three major photographic recovery publications in Spain.
