As the United States prepares to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 2026, the City of Lynchburg has launched its own commemorative efforts. Just as it did in 1976, the City Council has appointed a committee to plan a meaningful local celebration. One of the centerpiece projects of this effort is the publication of a new book titled A Good and Pleasant Company: Lives and Legacies of Central Virginia.
This commemorative volume will feature 250 concise biographical sketches highlighting individuals who have shaped the history and character of Lynchburg and Central Virginia. Some of these men and women were born in Lynchburg, while others came to the region as children or adults. Whether they lived here for a lifetime or a brief moment, all left a lasting impact.
The individuals featured in the anthology span a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. Selection was made without regard to race, age, religion, or creed, with only one unifying criterion: all subjects are deceased.
The book will be organized chronologically into five historical sections, each introduced with an overview of the period as it relates to Central Virginia:
1776–1826 / 1827–1876 / 1877–1926 / 1927–1976 / 1977–2026
A Good and Pleasant Company is designed to appeal to both scholarly and general audiences. It will include select footnotes or endnotes and a concise bibliography. The editors, Drs. Dorothy and Clifton Potter—renowned, retired history professors from the University of Lynchburg—bring decades of historical scholarship to this project.
The official book launch and presale event will take place on Friday, August 15th, 7pm at Givens Books & Little Dickens, 2236 Lakeside Drive, Lynchburg. The book has already garnered endorsements from several prominent community members and local historians.
This project is part of a broader regional effort to honor the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. The LYH250 committee is actively partnering with the Bedford County and Campbell County Committees, as well as other regional organizations, to ensure a collaborative and inclusive celebration across Central Virginia.
