Join Boat-Ting for an intimate night of spontaneous and improvised music, bringing together adventurous musicians from London’s experimental, jazz and contemporary music scenes, creating unique performances entirely in the moment.
This evening features music from John Butcher & Kay Grant, Nick Smith and Jo Morrison (Starnosdmole), and Lara Aisha & Rowland Sutherland.
John Butcher - Saxophone
John Butcher is a London-based saxophonist and composer known for free improvisation and experimental music. His work explores acoustics, resonance, multiphonics and the physical properties of sound. He has collaborated with leading figures in improvised and contemporary music internationally.
Kay Grant - Voice
Kay Grant is a British vocalist, composer and improviser whose work spans jazz, contemporary and experimental music. She uses the voice as an instrumental sound source and has performed and collaborated extensively across the UK and internationally.
Nick Smith - Electronics & percussion
Nick Smith is an experimental musician working with electronics and percussion. For Boat-Ting, he performs as part of STARNOSEDMOLE, an improvising project exploring live electronic and acoustic sound.
Jo Morrison - Voice & objects
Jo Morrison is a free-improvising vocalist and performance artist based in Essex. Her practice combines voice, objects, movement and sound, with a focus on experimental performance and spontaneous improvisation.
Lara Aisha - Flute
Lara Aisha Ali is a Nigerian-German flautist based in London. Her work spans classical, contemporary, jazz and experimental music. She studied at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and has performed in a range of contemporary and experimental settings.
Rowland Sutherland - Flute
Rowland Sutherland is a British flautist, composer and improviser. His career spans contemporary classical music, jazz, improvised music, orchestral performance and music from different cultural traditions. He has performed internationally and taught at leading UK music institutions.

The venue opens at 4pm for drinks in the bar. Please arrive before 8pm to allow time to enter the theatre and settle in! There is no allocated seating.
Theatreship is committed to broadening access to the arts - we know that ticket price is a huge barrier for some. If the regular ticket price is beyond what you feel able to afford for whatever reason, please don't hesitate to email us at [email protected] and we will do everything we can to help, no questions asked. We also offer arts supporter tickets, for those that can, to pay a higher price to support the venue, the artists who perform here and subsidised tickets for others.
Due to the historic nature of the ship, we’re sorry to say there is not currently step-free access into the theatre space.
