Join us for a special BMA Violet Hour edition of The Evening Ritual at the BMA. This experience invites guests to disconnect from the algorithm, relax, and engage fully with music in the beautiful setting of the BMA Sculpture Gardens.
The evening begins with a curated soundtrack of music inspired by a featured album as guests find their perfect space and socialize with others. As we unfold into the evening, the host, Basement Selector, will give a brief introduction to the Ritual, the practice of active listening with a background and history of the artist and album.
The album is then presented and played on vinyl, uninterrupted, in hi-fidelity sound. Guests quietly listen in community as the album plays. Immediately following the record, guests have an opportunity to reflect, discuss, and share stories related to their experience. We invite you to join the Ritual with us.

5:30 p.m. – Arrive, find your spot in the garden, grab a drink at Gertrude’s
6:30 p.m. – Album presentation and reflection
8:30 p.m. – Program ends
Bring your own blanket or cushion if you prefer to sit on the grass. Limited chairs, stools, and yoga mats will be provided by the BMA.

About Evening Ritual
The Evening Ritual is a space dedicated to celebrating and sharing groundbreaking albums through intentional, active listening sessions. Already in its second year, Evening Ritual has hosted over 35 sessions in Baltimore city, giving guests the opportunity to immerse themselves in music in a new way.
Hosted by founder and curator, Basement Selector, Evening RItual shares music from the 60’s through early 2000’s with a focus on R&B, Jazz, funk and Neo-Soul music on vinyl records. Past albums have included Alice Coltrane, Maxwell, D’angelo and Anita Baker to name a few. The experience is a return to the love of the album, physical media and in-person, shared experiences.
About DJ Basement Selector
John Canale is a lifelong creative, designer, music lover and vinyl collector. Also known as Basement Selector, he is the DJ, host and founder of Evening Ritual; a space that explores ground-breaking albums on vinyl in the form of intentional, active listening sessions. John curates experiences that build community through the shared love of music.
