Get ready to groove with some swing, funk and pop classics from the newly founded Blyth Big Band!Founded recently in January this year, the Blyth Big Band operates out of Yamaha Music School and joins a growing number of ensembles assembled by the school. Its members rehearse together every Thursday and have quickly gelled into a tightly-knit outfit. Saturday's concert will be their debut performance.
The band is directed by Michael Mather. Academically, Michael received his BMus (Hons) in 2016, followed by his MMus in Creative Practice through the University of Newcastle in 2018 where he specialised in composition, free improvisation and Hindustani Classical Music.
Since then Michael has developed a wealth of experience as a performer, teacher and musical director. He is also currently the conductor for the Vermont Big Band.
Perhaps you learned to play in school and haven’t played for a few years? Please consider joining the big band yourself. Lets dust off those instruments and use those skills you spent so long learning!
