We gather. We breathe. We heal. We rise.
This August, the community is invited into one of Philadelphia's most sacred spaces for three afternoons of movement, meditation, and music made for us. Black & Well is a free wellness series held at the historic Unity Friends Meetinghouse — a space that has held our people's prayers, courage, and freedom for nearly 250 years.

The Sessions
August 1 — Flow & Affirm · Restorative Movement & Live Music Ease into the series with gentle, accessible movement guided over live music. Through restorative postures and spoken affirmation, we release what we've been carrying and come home to our breath. No experience needed — every body is welcome.
August 15 — Liberated Mind · A Discussion on Blk Well-Being A guided meditation opens into real conversation: what does it mean for us to rest, to heal, and to be well — in mind, body, and spirit? Bring your wisdom. Bring your questions. We'll hold space for both.
August 22 — Ancestral Sounds · A Sound Healing Orchestra The series closes in vibration. A sound healing orchestra fills the meetinghouse with tones and rhythms that honor those who came before us — an immersive listening experience in a room our ancestors once moved through.
Stand Where Freedom Was Sheltered
Unity Friends Meetinghouse dates to 1775 and served as a station on the Underground Railroad. Our gatherings take place in the very room that holds the building's original hideaway spaces — and after each session, you're invited to open the hideaway doors and look inside, standing where refuge and courage were once given. This isn't a museum visit added on; it's the ground our healing stands on.
Your Guide: Jade Javon
Black & Well is produced and led by Jade Javon, a West Philadelphia native and mindfulness practitioner whose work weaves together science and intuition. Through her workshops — and appearances including NBC10's Philly Live — Jade has become known for holding space where people can meet themselves honestly, using breath, movement, and stillness as tools for liberation. The Ujima Friends Peace Center and Unity Friends Meeting are proud to bring her home to Waln Street to guide this series.

Ujima Friends Peace Center is an African-centered worshipping Quaker community rooted in North Philadelphia. True to its name — Ujima, the Kwanzaa principle of collective work and responsibility — the Center works to reduce violence and to be a safe haven offering educational, cultural, and recreational life to young people and adults. Its ministries feed hundreds of families through a twice-monthly grocery and clothing share, nurture children through its Freedom School summer program, uplift women's health through the Pan-African Sisterhood Health Initiative, and teach peace through the Mpatapo Peace Works curriculum, grounded in Quaker testimony and African-centered values.
Unity Friends Meeting worships in the 1775 meetinghouse at 4371 Waln Street — the oldest known Quaker-related meetinghouse in Philadelphia. Its walls carry nearly two and a half centuries of witness, including its role sheltering freedom seekers on the Underground Railroad, and its grounds were among the few places where enslaved people were permitted to be buried with dignity. Today the Meeting is being lovingly revived by the Ujima Friends community, returning worship, service, and gathering to this historic ground.
