Synopsis:
In the quaint English countryside, Charles Condomine, a successful novelist, is seeking inspiration for his next book. To gather material, he invites the eccentric medium Madame Arcati to conduct a séance at his home, much to the amusement of his wife, Ruth, and their friends. However, the evening takes an unexpected turn when Madame Arcati inadvertently summons the mischievous spirit of Charles's first wife, Elvira.
Elvira, with her ghostly charm and wit, decides to stick around, creating havoc and hilarity as she meddles in Charles's current marriage. Caught between his two wives—one alive and one deceased—Charles finds himself in a whirlwind of supernatural shenanigans. As he tries to navigate this new reality, the tension and laughter escalate, leading to a series of comical and unpredictable events.
Characters
Charles Condomine
Charles is a sophisticated and successful novelist with a dry wit and a penchant for the unconventional. He is curious and somewhat sceptical, which leads him to invite Madame Arcati to conduct a séance for research purposes. Charles is charming but finds himself in over his head when the séance unexpectedly brings back the spirit of his first wife, Elvira. His attempts to manage his current marriage while dealing with Elvira's ghostly antics create much of the film's humour and conflict.
Ruth Condomine
Ruth is Charles's practical and no-nonsense second wife. She is sensible and down-to-earth, often serving as a foil to the more whimsical characters around her. Ruth is initially amused by the idea of the séance but quickly becomes frustrated and bewildered by the supernatural events that follow. Her relationship with Charles is tested as Elvira's presence causes increasing turmoil.
Elvira Condomine
Elvira is Charles's deceased first wife, who returns as a ghost after the séance. She is playful, flirtatious, and mischievous, delighting in causing trouble for Charles and Ruth. Elvira's ethereal charm and sense of fun contrast sharply with Ruth's grounded demeanor. Her presence brings a mix of nostalgia and chaos, as she tries to reclaim her place in Charles's life.
Madame Arcati
Madame Arcati is an eccentric and colorful medium with a strong belief in the supernatural. She is energetic, enthusiastic, and slightly batty, providing much of the film's comic relief. Despite her odd behavior, Madame Arcati is genuinely skilled in her craft, as evidenced by her accidental summoning of Elvira. Her attempts to rectify the situation lead to many humorous moments.
Dr. George Bradman
Dr. Bradman is a local physician and a friend of the Condomines. He is rational and skeptical, often dismissing the supernatural elements as nonsense. Dr. Bradman's practical outlook and scientific background make him a counterpoint to the more whimsical and spiritual aspects of the story. He provides a steady, if somewhat skeptical, presence amidst the chaos.
Mrs. Violet Bradman
Mrs. Bradman is the doctor's wife and a friend of Ruth and Charles. She is pleasant, somewhat impressionable, and intrigued by the idea of the séance. Unlike her husband, Mrs. Bradman is more open to the possibility of the supernatural, adding another layer of contrast within the group. She serves as a supportive friend to Ruth and is often caught between skepticism and belief.
Edith
Edith is the Condomine's nervous and somewhat clumsy maid with a military background. She is eager to please but often finds herself in awkward situations. Edith's reactions to the strange happenings in the house add to the comedic elements of the story. Despite her initial bumbling, she plays a more crucial role in the unfolding events than one might expect.
