Pedagogies and Practices for Successfully Reaching African American Students
About this Event

Black in School Summer Institute

Join us for the Black in School Summer Institute on June 4-5, 2026 at Rex & Margaret Fortune Early College High School! Learn from leading voices in education working to close the African American achievement gap.
This year’s theme is Pedagogies and Practices for Successfully Reaching African American Students. Experience a unique opportunity to witness powerful pedagogy in action through guided school site tours. You’ll observe how culturally responsive practices designed to support Black children elevate learning for all students.

Additionally, we are excited to have three keynote speakers this year.

  • Dr. Chris Emdin: Professor of Science Education, Teachers College, Columbia University. Maxine Green Chair for Distinguished Contributions to Education.
  • Dr. Tyrone Howard: Professor of Education, UCLA. Founding Director, UCLA Black Male Institute. Pritzer Family Endowed Chair.
