About:
The World Theatre in Kearney and Rowe Sanctuary invite you to experience this stunning and heartfelt film on the big screen—and then stay afterward for an engaging panel conversation featuring some of Nebraska’s most dedicated listers and long-time birders. Our panelists will share their most unforgettable sightings, stories from the field, tips for birding, the ethics and excitement of “listing,” and what inspires them to spend countless hours exploring Nebraska’s prairies, wetlands, and river corridors.
The film captures the full spectrum of modern birding: the thrill of spotting a rare species, the joy of adding a new bird to a list, and the fatigue, crazy schedules, and trade-offs that come with the chase. Birding isn’t just for experts, and this panel will explore how birdwatching can spark curiosity, deepen our understanding of ecosystems, and bring joy to people of all ages and backgrounds. Panelists will discuss what first brought them to birding, share what keeps them inspired, and talk about the many ways people can connect with birds and nature.
Panel Members:
Rita Cunha became fascinated with birds after witnessing the Sandhill Crane migration over the central Platte for the first time in 2023. Since then, she has immersed herself in the prairies around her: surveying bumble bees, collecting wildflower seeds, volunteering, and (of course) birding. Quick to call herself a newbie, Rita is passionate about helping others discover (and treasure!) the unique quirks of this flyover landscape.
Jason “the Birdnerd” came to Audubon in 2013 after a 10 year career with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Starting at Mitchell Lake Audubon Center and joining Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center staff in 2015, St. Sauver has been the lead Education staff here creating programming for all ages and audiences like the international Let’s Go Birding Together and more recently, the Wildlife Explorers curriculum for middle and high school aged students to experience field surveys as an Ornithologist, Botanist, and Entomologist on field trips and in after school programming.
Tobin Brown: Tobin Brown is a software developer from Lincoln, Nebraska, who got into birding and bird photography in 2023. When he's not birding, Tobin enjoys biking, gardening, and cooking.
About the Film:
The Feature-length film, hilarious new documentary about extreme bird watching follows director Owen Reiser and his brother Quentin on their 2024 attempt to break the “Big Year’ record, for the Lower 48 by seeing well over 700 bird species. “Big Year’ referring to a birdwatching term for attempting to observe as many species of wild birds as possible in a calendar year.
