Birding by Bike: Birds on Two Wheels

🚲 Two wheels. A pair of binoculars. A whole different way to experience wild DC.
As part of Birding DC 2026, DC Bird Alliance is teaming up with our partners at DC Bicycling Concierge for Birding by Bike, a guided ride combining two of our favorite ways to explore the city: biking and birding.
We'll pedal through DC, stopping along the way to look and listen for birds, explore habitat, and experience some of the city's natural spaces from a completely different perspective.
This is not a race. We'll ride together at a comfortable pace with designated birding stops along the route. When it's time to bird, we'll get off the bikes, grab the binoculars and see who's around.

Registration required. The exact meeting location and route will be shared directly with registered participants before the event.
🚲 Route
We're starting at the Anacostia Park Boat Ramp (across from the Skating Pavilion) and following the Anacostia Trail to Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens for some great birding before heading back. The roundtrip is approximately 10 miles at a leisure pace with plenty of opportunities to rest.
🚲 What to Bring
- A bicycle in safe, working condition
- A properly fitted helmet
- Water and snacks
- Weather-appropriate layers
- Binoculars, if you have them
- Any basic bike repair supplies you normally carry
⚠️ Riding Safely
Participants must be comfortable riding a bicycle in an urban environment and able to safely control their bicycle for the duration of the ride.
All participants are expected to follow the instructions of ride leaders and comply with applicable traffic laws, regulations and ordinances throughout the program, including traffic signals and signage.
We will stop in safe locations before birding. Please do not attempt to use binoculars or otherwise bird while actively riding your bicycle.

🐢 Pace: Relaxed recreational ride with multiple stops for birding and interpretation
📏 Distance: Route distance will be provided to registered participants before the event
🛣️ Terrain: The route may include paved trails, bike lanes, city streets and other shared-use surfaces. Participants should be prepared for typical urban riding conditions.
🪑 Rest Stops: We will pause throughout the ride for birding and interpretation
🚲 Mobility: This is an active cycling program. Participants must provide and operate their own bicycle unless otherwise noted. Adaptive cycles are welcome. Contact DC Bird Alliance in advance if you have questions about whether the planned route will work for your equipment or access needs.
🚻 Restrooms: Information about restroom availability along the route will be shared with registered participants when available.
