Join Bountiful Cities, the City of Asheville and our guest instructor Alex Gray to explore what biochar is (and isn't), its historical and cultural contexts, how it's made and processed into a soil amendment, and its applications in soil regeneration and crop yield increase. We'll talk about ways of integrating biochar into existing farm and garden practices as well as some of the many uses of biochar outside of soils.Alex Gray is a biochar researcher and educator with a focus on soil regeneration, sustainable waste management, and regenerative agriculture. Introduced to biochar during his thesis at Appalachian State University, Alex explored its effects on soil health and crop growth. In Boone, he worked with local farmers, performing research as well as training on biochar production and application. Since then, Alex has continued to advance small-scale biochar production techniques and investigate its role in soil regeneration. Alex has also taught a course at Appalachian State on biochar and regularly leads workshops for farmers and community members, sharing knowledge on how to integrate biochar into regenerative agricultural practices.
