Opening the Black Box: What Machine Learning Models Tell Us About Geotechnical Structures
About this Event

BGA South West evening talk given by Dr David Taborda titled "Opening the Black Box: What Machine Learning Models Tell Us About Geotechnical Structures"

The growing availability of geotechnical monitoring data, increasing computational power, and the development of open-source machine learning tools have driven considerable interest in surrogate modelling within geotechnical engineering. This lecture examines both the general principles underpinning such models and their practical application to the back-analysis of geotechnical structures.

Dr David M. G. Taborda is a Reader in Geomechanical Modelling in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London, where he also serves as Director of the Doctoral Programme in Civil and Environmental Engineering. He is a member of the MAGE research group, whose work focuses on advanced numerical modelling of geotechnical problems. His research spans the constitutive modelling of soils, thermo-active structures and offshore geotechnics, with a particular current interest in the application of machine learning to the prediction, interpretation and back-analysis of geotechnical structures. He has published extensively on the development and calibration of advanced constitutive models and their application to complex geotechnical problems.
