BFI Art of Action - Terminator 2 + Live Electronic Performance + Talk

Theatreship is proud to partner with the BFI for 'Art of Action' - a season of iconic films celebrating the artistry of real action choreography. Over six nights, we will spotlight the genre through the ages, from early pioneers to new cult classics. Each event will feature a live performance in response to the film and introductions providing behind-the-scenes insights.

TERMINATOR 2

In this sequel set eleven years after "The Terminator," young John Connor (Edward Furlong), the key to civilization's victory over a future robot uprising, is the target of the shape-shifting T-1000 (Robert Patrick), a Terminator sent from the future to K*ll him. Another Terminator, the revamped T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger), has been sent back to protect the boy. As John and his mother (Linda Hamilton) go on the run with the T-800, the boy forms an unexpected bond with the robot.
In response to the film, there will be a bespoke electronic performance from Alien Alarm (Jim Purbrick), using AI vocal samples prompted by the dystopian premise of the film.

Jim Purbrick has been making electronic music since the 90s and released tracks on Formation Records in the 2000s. After becoming involved in climate activism he began to fill the white space around electronic music with social messages pieced together from 19th century poetry, literature and philosophy to find new ways to raise the alarm: and Alien Alarms was born.

Since combining breakbeats, field recordings of Brighton and 19th century words on the album “0 To 1”, Alien Alarms have explored the threats and uses of AI on “Android Dreams” and activism and despair on “Utopia Or Dystopia?”. Alien Alarms have released music on the Patchworks, Stresshead and Spirit Of Gravity labels, played live across the UK and been played on BBC Radio 6 Music by Tom Robinson who described their music as “continuing to push the envelope”.

The film will be introduced by multi-BAFTA winning filmmaker Natalie Hill and Dr Katie Fleming, lecturer in Twentieth-Century and Contemporary Literature to contextualise Linda Hamilton’s stunning transformation in this active role.
