Beyond the Reflection: A Psychomanteum Experience
Mirrors have long held an uneasy place in folklore, divination and beliefs surrounding the unseen. Beyond their ordinary purpose, they have been used for scrying, associated with spirits and omens, and treated as objects through which the boundaries of perception might be explored.
The psychomanteum is a form of mirror-gazing conducted in a darkened environment, traditionally associated with visionary experiences and attempts to communicate with the deceased.
Beyond the Reflection is a two-hour introduction to the psychomanteum, combining the history and folklore of mirror-gazing with the opportunity to experience the practice for yourself.
We will explore the beliefs surrounding mirrors, their use in divination, and how darkness, reflection and altered visual conditions can influence what we perceive.
Each participant will then be invited to spend time individually within our specially prepared psychomanteum, housed in an original vault dating to 1846.
There will be an opportunity afterwards to record and reflect upon your observations.
There is no expectation of seeing or experiencing anything in particular. Some people report imagery, impressions or unusual sensations during mirror-gazing, while others experience very little. All observations are welcome, without the need to attribute them to a supernatural cause.
No previous experience is necessary, and participation in the mirror-gazing exercise is entirely optional.
