Beyond the Haiku - Ways to capture the moment

Japanese poetry forms go back centuries, but the techniques employed in them are often quite surprisingly fresh to Westerners. Poets in Japan and all over the world have been experimenting with the haiku form ever since the time of Basho, but there are other forms which are equally inspiring.
This workshop will give examples of Japanese forms, including haiku, haiga, tanka and haibun. The emphasis will be on the poetic techniques employed in these forms, rather than adherence to strict traditional rules such as syllable count or incorporating seasonal words.
The aim of the workshop is to encourage people to experiment with the techniques used in these Japanese forms to create their own short poems, to 'capture the moment'.
Julia Wakefield is a visual artist and writer. She has had one poetry collection published in New Poets 20, part of Friendly Street Poets’ New Poets series. She is the convenor of the Bindii collective, the only poetry group in South Australia that specialises in Japanese forms. She has won awards for her poetry, her children’s writing, her artwork and her illustrations. She runs workshops in creative bookmaking, beginners’ drawing, and the art of haiku.
Cost: $30/$25 conc.
