Join a creative craft-based workshop for South Asian LGBTQ+ folks to create, imagine, connect and dream beyond heteronormative structures
About this Event

What does belonging mean when the world wasn't designed with us in mind? What would it look like to create belonging outside of heteronormative structures? How can we begin to create portals into a world that truly centres us?

Join artist and facilitator Aaran Sian (they/them) for a creative workshop exploring belonging through the lens of unbelonging. Together, we'll reflect on the spaces, systems and expectations that have shaped our lives as Queer and Trans South Asians, before imagining new ways of belonging that begin with us.

Using collage, drawing, writing and mixed-media materials, participants will create a two-sided 'portal'. One side will explore experiences of exclusion, expectations or structures that have made us feel outside the lines. The other will imagine radical futures rooted in community, care, joy and belonging on our own terms. Participants will have the option to contribute their artwork to a collective installation as part of Dhaga's exhibition (be)longing, or take their creation home.

Who is it for:

• This workshop is for Queer and Trans+ South Asian participants.
• We welcome anyone of South Asian or mixed South Asian heritage, living within the South Asian diaspora and who identify as LGBTQ+ or is questioning their identity.
• Any homophobia, transphobia, racism or ableism will not be tolerated.

Skill level:

• No artistic experience is needed.
• This workshop is all about connection, intuition, creativity, conversation and collective imagination.

Materials:

• All materials will be provided

• A dedicated space to dream and envision new futures
