About this Event
4/18 First Ever Berkshire BookCon is of Course Going to Be a Very Queer Affair
Saturday, 12:30-2:00pm
Berkshire Athenaeum
1 Wendell Ave
Pittsfield, MA 01201
It kicks off with a reading & talk by a famous local queer author about her very queer debut novel:
Rules for Ghosting by Shelly Jay Shore is a debut novel about Ezra Friedman, a Jewish trans man who can see ghosts, forcing him to confront his family's failing funeral home and his own identity, all while navigating a new romance and the ghost of his crush's late husband. It's a blend of queer romance, family drama, and Jewish culture, exploring themes of love, loss, and finding your place, with a supernatural twist. It is a national bestseller and named one of the New York Times Book Review’s Best Romances of the Year,
But that is not all the queerness of our very first Berkshire BookCon:
2-4 pm: Exhibit Hall
Location: Berkshire Athenaeum Main Floor (known as the Blake Room)
Fifteen local literary organizations, artists, and bookish creators will be showcasing their work and sharing about their process and programs! You’ll have a chance to learn about bookbinding, book cover design, writer’s residencies, zines, storytelling, and more. You’ll also be able to vote on our Alternative Book Cover contest, participate in a library treasure hunt, and take advantage of photo ops! Berkshire County is home to 3 local queer-owned bookstores, all of whom will be well represented: 1) Bear & Bee Bookshop in North Adams, 2) Indie Readery & Records in Pittsfield, & 3) Yellow House Books in Great Barrington.
3-4:30 pm: Book Fair for Adults
Location: Hot Plate Brewing Co.
In a throwback to the book fairs from elementary school days, Indie Readery & Records, a queer owned book store, along with local creators, will be selling a curated selection of books and book-related merchandise.
Q-MOB SEEKS BOOK CON HOST & BOOK CLUB VOLUNTEERS: Please if you'd like to gather Q-MoB book geeks together to sit together at the author talk and to explore BookCon together. Our secret hope is that the BookCon gang will create a new Queer Men's Book Club & pick some great summer queer books to read together and discuss. Give us a call at 413-344-8162 if you'd like to talk about co-hosting a queer men's book club or hosting our BookCon group of queer book geeks.
