Few music lovers are unfamiliar with the seminal “Tradition!” song from the famous Fiddler on the Roof musical. There’s a reason why the concept of tradition plays such a pivotal role in music. Throughout time, music has always evolved alongside culture and society. The intermingling of culture and music has led to the development of clear cultural traditions, of which music is almost always a significant aspect. Musicologists often refer to music as a “mirror,” as it reflects society while simultaneously impacting society’s own cultural evolution. In this program, we will explore some examples of established traditions, and how those traditions impacted the development of music that came out of those cultures.
