Stories of intrepid women who struggled, fought and won the American Revolutionary War On the eve of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Women Who Would Be Free tells the story of 168 heroines in the founding of the United States of America.
They were brave and resourceful women, sometimes in the fighting itself, or when defending their homesteads, running farms or businesses and at other times in highly consequential roles of delivering secret messages to commanders or providing Continental troops with ammunition, supplies and medical assistance.
Organized chronologically, Women Who Would Be Free begins with discussions of colonial America, the indigenous population of America, Native American Indians whose land this once was and includes information and perspectives about Black women who were enslaved. These women who fought for and made the United States of America possible believed in God, family and country and had a vision of what was right for America.
Women Who Would Be Free is for Americans and others who want to know more about women’s participation in the American Revolutionary War and their courageous acts in the face of the perilous, violent and often treacherous times of the extreme civil strife that was the American Revolution. These are the stories of intrepid women who did what they did so we can live in a free country.
Mike Young is a twelfth generation American whose maternal ancestors came to America from England in the early 1600s.
