Protests, Festivals and Renovation: Belsize from 1945-2000.
By 1945 Belsize was very neglected, with many properties destroyed or damaged and most people living in bedsits. The design of new flats and houses built in the 1960s were in stark contrast to their Victorian neighbours. Gradually fashions changed and young middle class couples started to buy and renovate flats in old houses. The community swung into action to oppose a motorway being cut through the area and to organise lively annual festivals. Gradually most of Belsize was covered by conservation areas. The number of households decreased as flats replaced bedsits and many more people owned rather than rented their homes. Cafes and restaurants flourished and celebrities spotting became a favourite pastime.
Hear about this, and much more, on the walk at 11.00 a.m. or 2.30 p.m. on Sunday 5 October. The walk starts in the open space at Swiss Cottage, to the left of the library entrance. it will last about 90 minutes and end on Belsize Lane in Belsize Village.
