About this Event

Join photographer Estelle Cadwallader for an engaging and collaborative photography workshop exploring the meaning of community and the ethical responsibilities involved in photographing people, places and everyday life.

Part of Estelle's Pockets of Community MA research project, this workshop invites participants to think creatively about belonging, connection and the different ways communities are formed, experienced and represented.

Through group discussion, examples of documentary photography and a practical photographic activity, we'll explore how images can communicate stories about our surroundings and the communities we belong to.

What to expect

We'll begin by exploring the importance of ethics in photography, including consent, respect, representation and the responsibility photographers have towards the people and communities they document.

We'll then look at the work of photographers who have explored community in different ways, including Tish Murtha, Alec Soth, Wendy Ewald, JR and others. Their work will provide inspiration for thinking about how photography can document everyday life, relationships, shared spaces and individual experiences.

You'll then be invited to take part in a practical photography activity exploring the question:

What does community mean to you?

Your photographs could capture a person, a place, an object, an activity or something more symbolic. Community might be represented through a busy gathering, a shared space, a familiar street or even the absence of people.

There are no right or wrong answers. The emphasis is on creativity, personal interpretation and discovering new ways of seeing the world around us.

We'll finish by reviewing the photographs and sharing reflections on the different meanings of community.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is for anyone interested in photography, community, creativity or visual storytelling.

You don't need to be a professional photographer or have previous experience. Whether you enjoy taking photographs, want to explore your local surroundings or are simply interested in how communities are represented, you're welcome to participate.

You can work independently or alongside others, and there is no pressure to share anything you're uncomfortable with.

Photography, ethics and consent

Respect, choice, consent and responsibility are central to this workshop.

Participants will retain ownership of the photographs they create, and photographs or recorded material will only be used beyond the workshop with specific permission.

The workshop forms part of a non-profit MA research project and aims to create a supportive, collaborative environment where different experiences and perspectives are valued.
