Being Brummie Salon Sessions:
Politics and Populism Post Local Elections

Being Brummie is partnering with The Philosophers' Yard for its third and final Salon Session to discuss politics and populism in the days after the 7 May Birmingam local elections. This event is made possible with support from the University of Birmingham's Race Equality Network (REN) and the Birmingham Race Impact Group (BRIG).

When was the last time you felt excited about voting? What do the local election results reveal about trust in politics today? Does populism empower citizens or deepen division?

This event will feature a talk from Rohil Aurora, joint honours graduate in Politics and Philosophy from Durham University undertaking a rotational graduate scheme at the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) since 2024. During his time at the WMCA he has worked within the Public Affairs team, the Mayoral Office, and has recently joined the governance team to support our Local Authorities through the election period and post-election. His presentation will analyze the implications of the election results, highlighting their impact on regional, national, and global scales. The talk will continue with the philosophical implications, discussing the role of populism, character and distrust in global politics.

Either side of the talk, there will be an opportunity to share perspectives and engage with others in a friendly, open environment.

The event will take place at BRIG Café at The Warehouse, located in Birmingham city centre.
