About this Event
Discover the Black history that spans King Street East: from the first Underground Railroad site excavated in Canada, to one of Toronto's first soul food restaurants whose name, design and atmosphere surfaced the history of slavery in the US and Canada, while also celebrating the community leaders who risked everything to ensure freedom.
This tour will be led by Emerging Historian Faith Ebanks. Faith Ebanks is a recent graduate of the University of Toronto, with an honours bachelor’s degree with a double major in History and Art History. As a history major her main area of focus is on Caribbean history particularly during the 16th-19th centuries, as well as African and Indigenous history.
Start Point: Inglenook Community School (19 Sackville Street)
Our staff and volunteers will be at the tour's starting location 30 minutes prior to each tour. Please arrive at least 5-10 minutes prior to the start of the tour to allow time for check in. Feel free to call us at (647) 542-3450 if you are having trouble finding the start location.
End Point: 30 Adelaide Street East
Length of Tour: Approximately 90 minutes
Distance and Terrain: This tour is approximately 1.7 kilometers in distance and takes place predominantly on paved city sidewalks and streets. There are some unpaved portions of the route that take place in city parks.
Registration is required for all tours. Please note: you will not be able to join a tour group if you have not registered ahead of time.
This tour uses individual audio headsets. All registered participants will be provided with an individual headset that will allow you to hear the tour guide throughout the tour.
