An underdog in a sports film with a lot of heart is nothing new--especially from the writer and director of Hoosiers (1986). But it is how it’s done that makes the difference between just checking boxes and being great. You cast excellent actors to deliver an earnest and thoughtful script. You get Jerry Goldsmith to compose a gorgeous and moving score. All of that is a touchdown. This film is beautiful, not just because of the resilience of this beloved character, but because of what it says about what humans can achieve when they see past their own limitations--and get little help from their friends.
