Behind the Scenes at Science Museum Group’s National Collections Centre

Site visit to National Collections Centre, Science and Innovation Park

This new purpose-built facility has transformed the Science Museum Group’s care for the collection and enables people to explore much more of it than ever before. Around 300,000 historic objects have now been carefully moved to this sector-leading facility, bringing together these objects under one roof for the first time for conservation, study and public access.

Regular public tours of the building began in late 2024, allowing members of the public to get up close to a world-class collection of objects from science, technology, engineering, medicine, transport and media. SWFed members will be offered a special behind-the-scenes tour of the collection along with fascinating insights from the staff who work there.

Our host Alison Faraday, Collections Engagement and Volunteering Manager, has worked for the Science Museum Group since September 2021. Her previous jobs include working for the British Library. She is responsible for providing engaging access to the Science Museum Group collections housed at the National Collections Centre, for curators, researchers, the broader public, and educational groups.
