BEHIND THE GOLD: WINNING TRAITS OF OLYMPIC AND PARALYMPIC CHAMPIONSThe 2002 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games brought excitement and entertainment, filling us with community pride. The Games also built a culture of excellence surrounding the great sports champions who grew up in or made our community their home.
We relate to Olympic and Paralympic athletes as the smiling kids next door whose passion for sport and deep-rooted ambitions have led them to success. Their success comes from personal motivations, goal establishment, perseverance, teamwork with others, and rising from failure. These are the winning trails of great champions!
BEHIND THE GOLD brings the audience deep into the storyline of some of the world’s greatest Olympic and Paralympic athletes. The series of riveting fireside chat interviews will bring back memories and provide relatable life lessons.
HOST Tom Kelly
As a seven-year-old in Wisconsin, Tom Kelly became hooked on the Olympics by watching Penny Pitou win silver in the downhill on TV at the 1960 Olympic Winter Games. Since then, he has become a renowned Olympic storyteller, working with over a hundred medalists as the longtime spokesperson for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team.
PARA OLYMPIC ATHLETE Chris Waddell
An aspiring collegiate ski racer, Chris Waddell’s life was transformed in a training accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Waddell never looked back, transferring his skills to become one of the greatest Paralympians ever, winning a dozen medals (11 winter, one summer), including five gold. He also took on the responsibility of raising awareness of Para sport. He climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in his wheelchair. He was named one of People Magazine’s Most Beautiful People. His One Revolution organization has also helped showcase the sport. Today, he remains one of Paralympic sport’s most excellent ambassadors, living in Park City.
This program is in partnership with the National Ability Center.
