Beginner Street Jazz Intensive with Carlos Neto (NYC)

If you haven’t attended the previous workshops, no worries at all — each intensive is structured differently, with new material, new pacing, and a fresh approach every time. While the core values remain the same, this edition introduces a brand-new format designed to better support your growth. You can expect dedicated time for questions, a scheduled break to re-energize, and extended time to dive deeper into choreography.

This course is ideal for anyone beginning their journey with group dance classes, as well as dancers who have already started and want to elevate their technique in a supportive and exploratory environment that goes beyond learning steps.

Throughout the intensive, we’ll focus on transforming simple movement into a fuller, more complete performance. We’ll work through drills, grooves, choreography foundations, execution techniques, and strategies for quicker pick-up and stronger memorization.

Advanced dancers looking to revisit fundamentals and fine-tune their craft are more than welcome.

A syllabus will be provided for you to keep and practice after the intensive, and scholarships will be awarded to select participants.

• Introduction and class etiquette
• Warm-up and brief workout
• Basic grooves and movement fundamentals
• Reversing movement foundations
• Short combinations (drills and grooves)
• Teamwork exercises (working with other dancers)
• An introduction to textures, speed changes, and points of reference

A dedicated space to ask questions and clarify concepts from the first half.

Take time to re-energize. While the Q&A runs from 12:00 to 12:30 PM, if you’d prefer a longer break from 12:00 to 1:00 PM, you are absolutely welcome to take it — especially during our last intensive, it became clear that a longer break was definitely necessary. This hour will be completely free-flowing, so you can reset, hydrate, or review anything at your own pace.

This section follows our new format, offering a more dynamic structure to support faster learning and deeper exploration. We’ll work through several different combinations at a quicker pace, with extended time to practice, repeat, refine, and perform them. Throughout the session, we will focus on:

• Strengthening memorization and pick-up skills
• Reversing movement
• Working with speed changes
• Developing clarity, confidence, and execution
• Enhancing performance quality and audience engagement

A syllabus will be provided for you to keep and practice after the intensive, and scholarships will be awarded to select participants.

The intensive will be held in the Midtown Manhattan area, potentially at Ripley Grier Studios, where we host it annually. Depending on enrollment, the location may vary, but it will remain within Midtown. The exact studio will be announced by email a few days prior to the event.
