In the eyes of some, the advent of Moore College 170 years ago marks the beginning of Anglican theological education in modern Australia. While there is some truth in this claim, it is important to ask whether it is the whole truth. By 1856 when the College was founded, European settlement in Australia was almost 70 years old. The Church of England in Australia and Tasmania (as it was coming to be called) had been grappling with difficult circumstances, and its leaders’ attempts to provide theological education took place during the establishment of these neo-British societies. But was it really the case that Anglicans had done little or nothing during these seven decades? Geoff Treloar, Senior Research Fellow at the Australian University of Theology, will answer these questions and shed light on how and why Moore College was set up in the manner that it was.

Speaker Bio:
Although formally retired, Geoff Treloar remains research active as Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the Australian University of Theology and Visiting Fellow in History in the School of Humanities and Languages at the University of New South Wales. He was formerly the Dean at Robert Menzies College, Macquarie University (1992-2003), Head of Basser College at the University of New South Wales (2003-2010) and Director of Teaching and Learning at the Australian College (now University) of Theology (2011-2020). He is the author of Lightfoot the Historian (Mohr-Siebeck, 1998) and The Disruption of Evangelicalism: The Age of Torrey, Mott, McPherson and Hammond (IVP/SPCK, 2016). He is a foundation member of the Evangelical History Association of Australia and was Editor of its journal, Lucas: An Evangelical History Review, for thirty years from 1992 to 2022. His current research is on the history of theological education and the biographies of several contemporary Australian theologians.
