Beating Heart of Hope

We — the people — have been relentlessly subjected to all manner of horrors in recent years, in the form of images, video, shocking headlines.

Westerners either seem to passively consume these horrors, or to try and avoid them completely, retreating into their own individuality.

Among us, in our communities, are fellow humans with roots and kin in places directly affected by the whims of warlords.

For these folks, massacres are more than headlines. They translate into anxious phone calls to check on loved ones and into significant emotional and financial burdens. For some, these developments reawaken past trauma they had to flee and heal from.

In these circumstances, what does being a friend mean? How can we be there for the members of our communities who are in pain? What does support look like? Can we stand alongside those affected in their struggle for justice?
