Beautiful baskets don’t have to begin on expensive Nantucket molds. In this hands-on class, students will learn how to build and shape a basket using simple forms, flexible materials, and traditional weaving techniques.
Starting with a 4-inch wooden base, you’ll learn how to secure the spokes using either a chase weave or twined weave, then shape the sides with a variety of flat, round, and flat/oval reeds. As you weave, you’ll learn how to guide the basket’s form, control the shape, and choose the final height of your piece.
Each basket will be finished with a flat/oval rim and securely lashed with binder cane, creating a strong, functional basket you can take home and use. No fancy mold required — just your hands, good materials, and the skills to shape something beautiful.
