Every month Jonny Mojo (Achilles Wheel), Gary Campus (Deadbeats) and Tim High (Tim High & the Mighty) host a cast of the finest musicians from around the region to conjure lightning in a bottle. BBD is a gathering point for everyone who wants to plug into the feeling of what it was like soaking in the otherworldly sounds at a Dead show while sharing the dance muse with the tribe. The music that bubbles forth from these nights captures the spontaneous, primal, orgasmic spirit that so many of us crave.
Jonny is a proverbial pied piper who guides the flock to the promised land with his incredibly versatile guitar playing and passion for the music coursing through his veins. He is one of the brightest lights among Nor Cal GD guitar specialists. He lives and breathes this music like a fish swimming in the sea. Gary emanates bliss in every beat and gracefully molds his style to elevate the strengths of his collaborators. He’s been a rhythmic instigator in the region for 45 years now and is more fired up than ever. Nothing makes Tim happier than singing Grateful Dead songs as is evident by his assertive and heartfelt renditions of the classics as well as obscurities. Akin to Mickey Mantle switch-hitting, he transmits the fire and brimstone of Bob and the raw emotion of Jerry.
Our marquee special guest for this month is a rapidly rising star who has accomplished more at age 19 than many musicians do in a lifetime. We’ve seen Bella Rayne at the Crazy Horse three times now with her own band. It will be exciting to drop the young axe-slinger into a different dynamic and see how she responds. Considering she has been a perpetual artist-at-large for the past couple years, sitting in with the likes of Melvin Seals, Stu Allen, Allman Betts Band and countless others, we are expecting her to take to BBD like a fish to water.
Returning to BBD for the umpteenth time is world class bassist and angelic vocalist, Justin Purtill. A graduate of the Berklee School of Music and frequent collaborator of Stu Allen, Justin is a loaded weapon when it comes to playing the music of the Grateful Dead. He attacks everything with a punchy, funky groove and keeps the dancefloor bouncing. His vocal prowess comes with a lot of fun suggestions for out-of-the-box tunes to include in the setlist.
We are thrilled to report that the final piece of this puzzle is keyboard wizard, Andre Phylling. Andre is a total madman who holds nothing back when it comes to intergalactic improvisation. He will surely light a fire under the rest of the band and take the songs in directions we’ve never even imagined!
