Once a neighborhood of Black owned businesses and residences, the area was “redeveloped” mid 20th century for a Civic Center and street reconfiguration. Remnants of jazz history persist among repurposed office buildings and colorful murals. Major projects underway include the Charity Hospital redevelopment, hotel conversions and preservation of 19th century residences. Join the Friends of the Cabildo to examine the fascinating mix of adaptive reuse, historic preservation and Black history in the “Old Back of Town”. Back of Town Tour
