Join us for an autumn evening bat walk to discover how bats prepare for the colder months.
Led by Steve England.
About this Event

Join the Friends of Horfield Common on a guided walk led by wildlife educator, local historian and nature enthusiast, Steve England Steve England Outdoor Learning . We will walk around Horfield Common to spot, identify and learn all about these wonderful flying mammals.

Using bat detectors, we will identify species still active as they feed intensively before winter.

During this seasonal walk, we will explore:

  • How do bats build up fat reserves for hibernation?
  • Where do they spend the winter months?
  • How does cooler weather affect bat activity?
  • What challenges do bats face as nights draw in?
  • Why are urban green spaces still vital at this time of year?

This walk focuses on survival, migration and hibernation, offering a different perspective on bat ecology as the seasons change.

The meeting point for the start of this walk is the Friends of Horfield Common noticeboard, just outside entrance to the Ardagh Community Trust.

It is ESSENTIAL to wear sturdy footwear, be stable on your feet, and bring a torch!

The event is scheduled to end at 8:15pm, but this will be dependant on the number of bats.

There are limited spaces on this walk. Booking on a first come first served basis, and must be booked in advance!

Ticket prices

£10 per person, which includes the Eventbrite service and processing fees.

Cancellation/Postponing due to Poor Weather

Steve England Outdoor Learning events take place outdoors, and therefore unfortunately may need to be postponed or cancelled in the days leading up to the event if it seems that the weather will be too poor for it to be run safely. FoHC will always aim to confirm cancellation of the event 24 – 48 hours in advance (though on very rare occasions, sudden weather changes may mean it's closer than this). Please keep an eye on your emails for information regarding this.
