This event will feature remarks from the former United States Acting Secretary of Defense and a conversation with by our Inaugural John Howard Fellow, Andrew Blyth . CIS executive director, Tom Switzer will moderate proceedings.
In 2021, a landmark event unfolded as the heads of three leading liberal democracies — spanning the strategic expanse of the Asia-Indo-Pacific regions — announced the public unveiling of AUKUS; a new strategic alliance signalling a new chapter in international diplomacy and security cooperation.
The success of the AUKUS alliance hinges not only on robust and impactful political leadership, but also on private business and industry spanning a variety of sectors to participate.
Now, 1000 days on, how is the practical implementation of this deal panning out? how does AUKUS impact on Australia’s strategic autonomy? And in the face of looming UK and US elections, what could be the impacts on cooperation and implementation?
Christopher Miller is widely touted as a frontrunner for Secretary of Defence should President Trump be re-elected. Miller served as United States Acting Secretary of Defense from November 9, 2020, to January 20, 2021, under President Trump. Before this role, he held positions including Assistant Sec. of Defense for Special Operations/Low Intensity Conflict and Deputy Assistant Sec. of Defense for Special Operations and Combating Terrorism. His responsibilities included overseeing special operations forces in counterterrorism and strategic policymaking at the National Security Council from March 2018 to December 2019.
Andrew Blyth is the John Howard Fellow at CIS. His prior roles include managing the John Howard Prime Ministerial Library and as a senior adviser and chief of staff. Andrew is author of recent CIS research paper; From ANZUS to AUKUS: Howard’s Legacy in Shaping Australia’s Defence Strategy.
Tom Switzer is the Executive Director at the Centre for Independent Studies, and formerly hosted Between the Lines on the ABC’s Radio National. He is also a regular contributor to The Australian and the Australian Financial Review .
