Register here: https://www.swordandshield.nz/event-details/august-beginners-course
This course will be run by Nico, our chief instructor, and will teach you the basics of saber, sidesword and longsword. Once you have completed the course, a brief safety grading and joined the club proper, a number of different weapons will be open to you, ranging from arming sword through to longsword, saber, various pole arms. The options are (almost) limitless!
Please note that there may be some breaks in the course due to public holiday weekends.
All our courses and indeed the club itself are run by volunteers; all proceeds go to keeping the club running.
Frequently asked questions:
Q: How old do I need to be to attend Auckland Sword and Shield?
A: We currently do not accept members under the age of 18, including under caregiver supervision.
Q: Swinging swords at people? Isn't that more of a "boys" sport?
A: Definitely not! HEMA is for everyone, regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation, or any of the other things bigots like to discriminate against. Anyone and everyone is welcome at Auckland Sword and Shield, provided you are over the age of 18.
Q: Do I need to be physically fit to participate?
A: While a level of fitness will help with some of the more intense parts of training and sparring, an interest in and willingness to learn are infinitely more important in starting your HEMA journey. If you have any disabilities or conditions that might impede your training in any way, feel free to reach out to us to discuss.
Q: What do I need to bring with me?
A: Clothes you can comfortably move around in for physical activity, and a large water bottle especially in the summer months. A Box/Cup/Genital protection is highly, highly recommended as accidents do happen. Fully covered skin is also recommended, as well as removing any jewelry. Auckland Sword and Shield provides a fencing mask, plastron (a plastic chest protector), gloves, and any required swords.
