The Breakthrough Theatre Company will hold auditions for the Ian Donley play, "Where Are the Angels in America?" on the following dates and times:Saturday, February 28, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.
Sunday, March 1, 6 p.m.-8 p.m.
*no appointments. Just show up anytime between the hours listed.
SYNOPSIS: High school drama teacher, Ted Davidson, gets caught in the middle of a culture war as his motives are questioned, when he begins teaching Tony Kushner’s Angels in America.
Auditions are open for actors aged 15 and up. Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. If you've never been in a Breakthrough production, please bring a headshot, or recent face picture. Resumes are appreciated, but not mandatory.
Performance Dates and Times:
April 10-27, 2026
Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 3 p.m.
*you must be available for ALL performances
All roles are unpaid, but we collect tips at each performance that are divided amongst the performers.

Teachers:
Mr. Ted Davidson = 30s-40s, straight male, high school drama
teacher, lost his gay brother to suicide, wants to make his
classroom inclusive, the ultimate “ally”
Ms. Sandra Long = early 30s, an English teacher, one of Ted’s
friends but a silent supporter, doesn’t want to rock the
boat.
Mx. Marla Brando = late 20s, non-binary, a PE and Health
teacher, knows a thing or two about getting caught in the
crossfire, has a social media following.
Mr. Henry Krazinski = 50s, an AP US History teacher, an older man
trying to be progressive, leader of the Gay-Straight alliance,
friends with Ted
Ms. Charlene = 40s-50s, a security guard the kids love, comes
in during rehearsal scenes
Students:
Macy Freeman = 17, a “Rachel Berry” type, president of the
Drama Club, uncomfortable with Angels in America
Cole Adams = 16, a gay kid, looking for solace in a
relationship
Derek Jameson = 18, the jock, looking for a an
extracurricular activity
Bethenny Johnson = 17, the popular girl who has an
“undervalued talent”
Jamie Reed = 17, a trans girl who has socially transitioned,
more comfortable behind-the-scenes
Ben Davidson = 16, Ted’s closeted gay son, a peppy book nerd
who has an artistic side, has a crush on Cole
Olivia Franklin = 18, another student looking to fill a
credit.
Erika Cable = 17, looks at drama through an academic lens
Other Adults:
Melissa Davidson = 30s-40s, Ted’s wife, works as a school
receptionist, will fight tooth-and-nail for her family
Principal Greg Watkins = 60s, recently hired, elitist in his
understanding of education
Macy's Mom = 40s, a classic suburban woman who wants the world for her daughter
