Speaking In Tongues Audition Notice
Auditions will be held August 22nd for Melville Theatre’s November-December season Speaking in Tongues written by Andrew Bovell and directed by Brendan Ellis. Season runs Nov 20-Dec 6, 2026.
Rehearsals will be held an average of three days a week from end of August, specific days dependent on cast availability.
A callback audition will be held on August 24th by invite only.
Auditions will be in group workshop format, running 10-1pm and 2-5pm and will compromise of unscripted interpersonal exercises and reading of excerpts. Wear clothes that are comfortable and do not restrict movement.

All actors will be involved in intimate scenes which may include kissing and physical touch. All actors must be 18 or older at time of audition.
Note this play contains themes of infidelity, gendered violence and suicide. No sexual acts, violence or self-harm is shown on-stage.
Four actors are required to portray nine roles, listed below. Three actors will play two characters and one will play three, however the allocation of most of these roles is not dictated by the script so will be determined at the time of casting. All characters are said to be either married or in an adult romantic relationship and some reference having children but otherwise, have ambiguous ages. Therefore, casting will be dependent on chemistry between actors rather than age. This play is set in 90s Australia and all characters presented as CIS and heterosexual; despite this, actors of any gender and sexual identity are welcome to audition. Actors of any race or nationality are welcome to audition.
This play is dark and complex, with many instances of lines overlapping with each other and some movement pieces. As such, experienced actors are preferred but all auditionees will be considered.
Characters within the same part (section) will not be double-cast with each other.
Part One:
LEON, Sonja’s husband. Has an affair with Jane. (Cannot be double cast with John.)
SONJA, Leon’s wife. Considers having an affair with Pete but they change their minds at the last minute.
JANE, Pete’s wife, Nick’s neighbour. Has an affair with Leon.
PETE, Jane’s husband, Nick’s neighbour. Considers having an affair with Sonja but they change their minds at the last minute.
Part Two:
VALERIE, John’s wife, Sarah’s therapist. Goes missing, no body found.
SARAH, Valerie’s client, Neil’s ex-girlfriend. Moves on with her life without informing her ex-partner.
NICK, Jane and Pete’s neighbour. Suspect in Valerie’s disappearance.
NEIL, Sarah’s ex-boyfriend. Goes missing, no body found.
Part three:
JOHN, Valerie’s husband. Suspect in Valerie’s disappearance.
