GOD OF CARNAGE
A Tony Award-winning play by Yasmina Reza
Translated by Christopher Hampton
Directed by Jay Hash
A dark comedy about civilized society
All Volunteer/No Pay
Audition Character Descriptions
Alan — M, 30-45: High-powered, self-interested lawyer with a loose conscience and father of the assailant child; Pragmatic individual, but also impatient. Very sarcastic at times, but can turn vaguely menacing and misogynistic if cornered verbally. Constantly on his smartphone, making caustic comments to underlings and unethical deals to protect his employer.
Annette — F, 25-35: Trophy wife or gold-digger, she is Alan’s wife and mother of the child assailant. She has a slightly dated fashion sense and a plastered-on chipper attitude, but nerves and anxiety give her an uneasy stomach, verging on panic attack. However, she is very protective of her son and seems to have empathy for others (when sober).
Veronica — F, 25-45: A writer who, while a control freak and closeted alcoholic, pictures herself as the queen of social conscience and common courtesy— when in reality, she is a judgmental and domineering type. She’s the mother of the child who has been assaulted. As the play goes on and the meeting falls apart, the façade of civility slips away, leading to drunken violent assaults, both verbally and physically.
Michael — M, 30-45: A “blue-collar” import/export wholesaler of
household goods, who seems amenable and gregarious at first, but reveals his worse “blue collar tendencies” with bigoted/racist remarks and insults towards children, including his son who was assaulted. He is constantly trying to play both sides against the middle and seemingly switches his support to whomever is “winning” the argument at the time. Veronica’s alcoholism embarrasses him as he desperately wants to be liked, even though his own wife doesn’t seem to like him.
Participants of all races, ethnicities, national origins, sexual
orientations, gender expressions, and abilities are encouraged to submit.
Age is important to the story, so we will be sticking closely to the age ranges. However, If you are older/younger than the age range but can portray within the stated age ranges, that will be taken into consideration at the time of audition.
NOTE: At times, this play deals with occasional bouts of racist and
bigoted language— all actors must be comfortable with speaking the lines as written (even if deemed offensive). We are not allowed to modify any language in the play as per the licensing contract.
Rehearsals run March 16th through May 28th (several days a week).
Performance Dates: May 29th, May 30th, May 31st. There will be 4 performances total.
Please arrive at 1pm to fill out forms. Auditions start at 1:15pm.
Please bring your calendar to mark conflicts on your audition form.
Please bring a theatre resume/headshot if you have one. Not required, but helpful.
Audition will be cold readings from sides provided. No prepared
monologues needed.
