About this Event

Attention!

Something in you just turned and looked, didn't it?

That's how deep this one runs. One word, and the whole body stops and listens. We learn it young - Attention! Change of classroom. Attention! A toast to the happy couple. Attention! I have wonderful news.

Warning, welcome, applause, celebration. All arriving on the same word.

So here's the question worth sitting with for a moment.

When do you get to call it?

Not shout it. Just, call attention. To your ideas. To what you've quietly pulled off this year that nobody clapped for. To your turn in the conversation. To the dream you've stopped mentioning at dinner parties because it never quite gets the floor.

Here's the thing about attention: you're going to get it.

We all do. Every single one of us. The need gets met one way or another, through good work and warm rooms and people who lean in when we talk, or through the louder, stranger, more expensive routes. We all know a young Johnny in the back row who worked out that disruption gets noticed faster than good behaviour ever did. And most of us, if we're honest, have had our own Johnny moments. Blurted it out. Had one too many and told the whole table exactly what we thought.

Not a character flaw. Just a need, finding a door.

Once you really notice that, and I mean properly notice it, the way you're noticing it right now, you're already a step ahead of the game.

What actually happens on the night

This isn't counselling. It isn't a workshop where someone talks at you for fifty minutes and hands out a worksheet.

There's a short intro on attention - where the need comes from, why it drives so much of what we do, and what happens when it goes hungry. (If you've read Mark Tyrrell's The Dark Side of Human Needs, you'll recognise the territory. It's the same straight talk, with more laughing.) That intro finishes with real, usable ideas for getting this need met in your actual life.

Then we do the only thing that makes sense on a night about attention.

We give each other some.

Real attention. The kind you can feel land. Nine people at most, an hour of it, and a conversation about where else you might find it: at work, at home, in the parts of your week that have gone a bit quiet. Most people leave a little lighter than they arrived, and slightly surprised by that.

Because where we give our attention, our behaviour follows. Where we choose to receive it, our behaviour follows too. Change one and you've quietly changed the other.

Why bother with a Tuesday night?

When a basic need is properly fed, something interesting happens. The energy you've been spending trying to get it met - often without noticing you were spending it - comes back to you. And it tends to go straight into the big things. The ones that start with if only I had the time, the confidence, the...

You know the ones.
