Join us at InnerSpace Brewing Company for food, drinks, and a public talk by Dr. Solveig Irvine on "Dragonfly to Titan: Exploring Prebiotic Chemistry on a Distant Moon".
Titan, Saturn’s largest moon, is one of the most exciting places to explore in our solar system. It is the only moon with a thick atmosphere and has a weather system similar to Earth’s, with methane clouds, rain, rivers, lakes, and seas. Titan also has many complex organic materials on its surface, making it a good place to study how environments that could support life may form and how the chemistry needed for life began on Earth.
Dragonfly is a NASA mission in the New Frontiers Program that will send a rotorcraft lander to Titan. The Dragonfly Lander will travel to different locations, collect samples, and study the Titan surface and environment. Titan is an untouched chemical laboratory where all the ingredients for known life — organics, liquid water and an energy source — have interacted in the past. What Dragonfly uncovers will illuminate a past since erased on Earth and refine our understanding of habitability and whether the chemistry that sparked life here is a universal rule — or a wonderous cosmic fluke.
